A familiar sight to those who traverse Alki Beach might be the Statue of Liberty—or its replica, rather. Present-day Alki is a mix of mid-century bungalows, medium-rise waterfront apartments and condominiums, waterfront businesses, and a bike/foot trail tucked neatly between the narrow road and a slim beach. Alki’s settlers, the Denny Party, originally called the area New York Alki, because several of the members were from New York, and they had learned the word for “eventually” in Chinook Jargon (Wawa). This neighborhood’s fate was never meant for the city; it’s the beach-town atmosphere and the waterside activities that define this community along with historic abodes and vista viewpoints like the Hamilton Viewpoint Park.
